Innovation and technology: Giuseppe Riva guest of the LOG23 event

Giuseppe Riva during the speech

On Thursday 24 November, LOG23, the event created by Login, the monthly innovation and technology magazine of Corriere della Sera, kicked off. The initiative, hosted at the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, was attended by Prof. Giuseppe Riva, who gave a speech on the ethics of artificial intelligence.

"Artificial intelligence systems make decisions by learning from examples from the past. However, if the database used is partial, the systems will run into errors. Striking is the case of Google and its facial recognition system, which at the beginning was only tested to recognize images of white men," says Riva.

In sensitive fields, such as medicine, the problem of responsibility arises: "Who takes the blame in the event of a mistake during surgery? The doctor who used the system, the hospital that bought it, or the company that produced it? These issues today do not meet with an immediate answer, but we are only at the beginning of a process that is moving AI from the world of devices to the real world through robotics."

Riva concluded his speech by stating that the opportunities posed by artificial intelligence are undoubted, but it is equally important that users are aware of the presence of some objective limits, which are the subject of study by the global academic community and national, European and international regulatory systems.
