"Me, Us, Them: Relationships in the Age of Social Media and AI", the latest book by Prof. Riva

A new book explores the power and fragility of the "sense of We".

Professor Giuseppe Riva, Director of the Humane Technology Lab, publishes his new book, "Io, Noi, Loro: Relationships in the era of social media and AI" (Il Mulino), available from 24 January.

The book offers a profound reflection on how digital technology is transforming the way we relate and build communities, focusing on the "sense of Us": that feeling of shared belonging that is the basis of personal well-being and social cohesion.

The meaning of the "We" under scrutiny
As Professor Riva explains: "The 'sense of We' is a fundamental human need, rooted in our biology and evolutionary history. However, digital hyper-connectedness risks eroding it, amplifying individualism and loneliness."

Through scientific and experiential analysis, the book examines:

  • the neurobiological underpinnings of the "sense of We" and the crucial role of face-to-face interactions in promoting empathy, trust and cooperation;
  • the effects of digital communication, often fragmented and superficial, which leaves us virtually connected but emotionally isolated.

Prospects for a more humane digital future
"I, We, Them" is not limited to a risk diagnosis, but proposes strategies for cultivating the "sense of We" in the digital age, including:

  • educate in the conscious and critical use of technology;
  • create meeting spaces that integrate the digital world with the real one;
  • Promote an ethic of respect and responsibility online.

"Technology is not in itself an enemy of the 'sense of Us'", concludes Riva. "We can learn to use it wisely, to amplify our connections and build a more humane and supportive future."
