Innovation and technology: Giuseppe Riva was a guest speaker at LOG23
On Thursday, November 24, LOG23, the event inspired by Login, the monthly innovation and technology magazine of Corriere della Sera, kicked off. The initiative, hosted at the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, was attended by Prof. Giuseppe Riva, who gave a talk on the ethics of artificial intelligence.
«Artificial intelligence systems make decisions through learning from past examples. However, the systems will run into errors if the database is biased. The case of Google and its facial recognition system, initially tested only to recognize images of white men, is glaring,» Riva argues.
In strategic fields, such as medicine, the liability issue arises: «Who takes the blame for an error during surgery? The doctor who used the system, the hospital that bought it, or the company that produced it? These problems are not immediately addressed today, but we are just at the beginning of a process that is moving AI from the device world to the real world through robotics.»
Riva concluded his speech by asserting that the opportunities posed by artificial intelligence are unquestionable. Still, it is equally essential for users to be aware of the presence of certain objective limitations, which are being studied by the global academic community and national, European, and international regulatory systems.
